Animal Trainer

Animal Trainers are a specialty profession. Animals trainers go beyond breaking horses; they train most domesticated animals that have some intelligence to do simple tasks and obey simple commands. Trainners can work with all kinds of animals, or they specialize. Specialists are more expensive, but can train their specialty animal to do much more than a general trainer can.

Armorer

Armorers in Mathoja are usually contracted by the Khzardom and given a certification or “badge” to make or mend metal weapons and armor. Uncertified smiths cannot make martial weapons such as swords, battle axes, arrowheads and other weaponry, or create armor of any sort. Grumald armorers working in their native lands are not bound by the Khzar’s badge. Uncertified smiths can make small axe heads.

Baker

Bakers make baked goods are a common site in most Mathojan settlements, and serve to create staples and luxuries.

Blacksmith

Blacksmiths are one of the most versatile professions in Mathoja. They’re needed everywhere and can fabricate a variety of iron items. Depending on locations, blacksmiths will either be general utility for the needs of villages and towns, or will have a specific focus if in the city. Armorers, farriers, fine metal smiths are examples of blacksmiths with a narrow focus. Wuld general blacksmiths also serve as armorers.

Bookbinder

Bookbinders can create books or repair them. They are mostly focused in the cities that have the universities, since such places have the libraries and the need of such specialists.

Bowyer/Fletcher

Bowyers are an important fixture in villages and towns that have a population that depends on hunting. Each race has their own type of bow, and usually sticks with making just those. The bigger business is creating arrows that are frequently broken or lost. Fletchers must travel into the towns and cities to find certified Armorers to buy arrowheads.

Brewer

Brewers are located close to the crops, hives and streams that enable them to brew ales and meads. The brewer might be the biggest employer in a village, or the village may even exist because of the brewery. Brewers do a bustling business in the towns and cities where most of their product is consumed.

Butcher

Butchers are a necessary part of life in Mathoja. They’re ones who are experts not only with cutting meat, but with preparing and preserving it also. Butchers are fairly common, and always busy.

Carpenter

Carpenters in villages and towns are very much akin to contract workers, always on call to build structures or make wooden items. A carpenter is always highly skilled and will usually hire out local help for big projects. In the city, they are more specialized and focus on specific products, whether it be furniture, lathed items like bowls and the such, or other necessities.

Chandler

Chandlers or candle makers are common where there is a good amount of demand for light at night. Villages usually go to bed at nightfall, so the common rural person doesn’t have much need for candles, but travelling merchants always have a large supply of candles to sell to any villages that have Stays or Traveler’s Rests.

Cobbler/Bootmaker

Cobblers and bootmakers are one of the few skilled clothing professions found in the villages as well as the cities. The call for well-maintained footwear is high, and anyone who can fix a shoe is at time invaluable to those who do a lot of walking. Bootmakers are cobblers who specialize in making boots, but they too have need far and wide.

Cooper

Coopers are barrel makers, and are usually in highest demand in cities or towns along busy trade routes. Barrels are used to store dry goods and food for long periods of time. Coopers have some blacksmith experience and well as carpentry skill to fabricate barrels.

Coppersmith

Coppersmiths make items from the practical to the ornamental. They’re specialist blacksmiths, so they’re only found in the cities, but they do produce good to sell in towns and villages.

Farmer

Farmers are those people who work the soil and tend livestock or grow produce to sell in the towns and cities. They are also knowledgeable weather and season watchers. They tend to be simple people who live simple lives.

Farrier

Farriers are specialist blacksmiths who focus on taking care of hooves, by creating shoes and nails. They are found everywhere, and many times team up with blacksmiths in villages and towns to provide good service to people there. In cities, they are hired out by stables, or they own the stables to ply their work.

Fisher

Fishers are people who catch fish and other edibles from the ocean. They are able seamen and expert weather watchers.

Furrier

Furriers are dealers in fur, from hunting to skinning and tanning to fashioning furs into different products. Furriers in the villages and towns are the hunters and tanners, the furrier in the cities are the ones who fashion the pelts into items.

Glassblower

Glassblowers are considered specialists who create glass products for the well-to-do, and sometimes glass to be used in practical products such as lamps and windows.

Huntsman

Huntsmen in Mathoja are of two kinds, people who make a living hunting game (the ones who live in Villages and Towns), or field guides (the ones who live in the City) for the rich so they can hunt game. The guides also do the dirty work after the hunt, such as preparing the kills.

Lapidary/Jeweler

Lapidaries and jewelers are fairly common, but well sought professionals on the Mathojan Peninsula. All races have these artisans, and each race specializes in particular materials. Sidhe use bone and wood, Wuld use glass, Mathojans use non-precious stones and Grumald are the most sought after, for they do precious jewels. The profession is a mix of fine stone cutting and precious metal smithing.

Leathersmith

Leathersmithing is much like blacksmithing, except that the medium is different, and armor making is not controlled by the khzardom. Leathersmiths form and fashion all sorts of leather items, including pouches, armor, belts, sheaths, and even clothes. This is a very common profession in most of the Mathojan Peninsula.

Lorimer

A lorimer is a specialist blacksmith who makes bits, spurs and other pieces of metal horse gear. They often work in conjunction with a Saddler.

Mapmaker/Cartographer

A mapmaker is a professional who creates and collects maps. They are usually employed by people who are mapping out their land grants or wanting maps of large areas for exploration purposes. Since most of the Peninsula has been mapped out, most mapmakers these days are in the land grant business. Cartographers are mapmakers who are also artists who draw beautiful, but functional maps.

Market Master

A Market Master is a person who manages what is sold in an open air auction market area. Livestock and fresh produce are usually sold in a open air market. Sometimes a market master can be retained to sell other items.

Mason

Masons are typically hired out for civil projects in the cities and towns. They work on defensive structures, civil structures and the homes of the well-to-do. In villages they usually walk a circuit looking for work, and often become town guards or village constables while waiting for a job to arise. Grumald masons serve much the same purpose as Mathojan carpenters, and are held in high esteem. The Wuld mason is a dying breed, they are being replaced by the Grumald who are better equipped for the job.

Miner

Mining and miners are almost exclusively a Grumald profession. The Grumald’s purpose on the Mathojan Peninsula at the time of the Old Empire was to exploit the mineral riches of the Hard Hills. It is a standard job for the Grumald, but held in high regard.

Potter

Another common profession on the Peninsula. Potters are common and sought after. Most make standard items for everyday life, but some potters are very artistic or inventive, employing their know-how to make a name for themselves.

Ropemaker

Ropemakers are common throughout the Mathojan Peninsula. Each race has their own methods, materials and ways creating rope, but they are very busy and very much in demand.

Seafarers/Sailors

Mathoja has a small navy that keeps the pirates from the Neck of Mathoja from terrorizing what little shipping that is done in Mathoja. Most ships run from Los or Ren to Lis, Holik, Aven or Belja. A few run to the village of Trita on the eastern coast. Most sailors are under the pay of the navy. Other sailors do the merchant runs around Mathoja.

Shipwright

Mathoja has a small navy, fishing trade and mercantile shipping force that all need constant care, shipwrights are employed in the towns and cities that have dock areas. Some of the Wuld are fishers and have need to maintain the small vessels for the trade, as with the Sidhe.

Tailor

Everyone needs suitable clothing, and tailors are there to provide it. Many Mathojans in the rural areas make their own clothes, but the job is usually given to a tailor these days, for making clothing is a time consuming process, and all the muscle needed on the farm, herding or fishing takes up much time. This task has been long given to tailors of the other races. The Wuld are regarded as the best tailors of the Peninsula.

Tanner

This the dirty and smelly end of the leather business. Tanners are the ones responsible for turning freshly skinned hides into usable leather. The process is smelly at best, and if someone takes this as a profession, they need to be of lower CHA. The Sidhe have tanning skills , but they do not make it a constant profession like the Mathojans, Wuld and Grumald do.

Tentmaker

This is a specialty profession with the Mathojans, and a skill with the Sidhe. The Mathojans use tents oftentimes as simple pavilions and military housing. The tentmakers produce these items as they are needed. The Sidhe rely on the ones who have this skill to create shelter to live in. This skill is known by the the highest to the lowest.

Thatcher/Roofer

This is another common profession that is constantly employed at all levels. All places from the high Palace to the lowly hovel need their roofs tended to on a fairly constant basis. This profession provides enough work for all employed doing it.

Undertaker

Usually when temples are tasked to prepare a body for its final rest, it is for nobility, heroes and High Priests. The rest are taken care of by undertakers, who prepare the body as per appropriate religious custom. The family or friends of the deceased take care of gathering the priests and setting up for the rituals.

Vintner

Winemaking is most popular among the Wuld, who make the most sought-after wines on the Peninsula. Mathohjan wines are mostly common and do not come up to the same standard, but it is standard fare in Mathojan Stays and Traveler’s Stays. Vintners grow and make the wine, as well as take it to market for sale.

Woodcutter

Woodcutting as a profession is only practiced by Mathojans, who are very careful these days to manage the woods they cut the wood from. Woodcutting involves felling the trees and cutting them into usable planks and boards.
